Megnesium Stearate

Magnesium Stearate is a magnesium salt of Stearic acid. Since Stearic acid is a mixture of chiefly Stearic acid and palmatic acid, the Magnesium Stearate is chiefly mixture of Magnesium Stearate as well as Magnesium palmitate. It is fine, white, impalpable unctuous power, tasteless and odourless or with a faint odour of Stearic acid. Normally compressed tablet formulations consist of Magnesium Stearate in usual concentrations of 1% or less than 1% based upon final weight of tablet.

Lubrication action of Magnesium Stearate is due to its organic part i.e. Stearic acid or palmatic acid. It acts between surfaces in relative motion to prevent friction and wear while compression.

Application

• As lubricant component in compressed tablets.
• As a component in dusting powder.
• In semisolid preparation like creams to act as a mechanical barrier to skin irritant.
• In sustain release tablet formulation to release the active medicament gradually.
